Bishop Knestout has dispensed all the faithful in the Diocese of Richmond from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until further notice. However, if you choose to attend a public Mass during the weekday or weekend, it is absolutely imperative that you adhere to the various guidelines and requirements. Please take the time to watch our video on how to safely return to Mass and participate in the liturgy. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the parish office.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19, Mass is still being live-streamed for use on various Diocesan digital media accounts of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, including, but not limited to, the websites of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and the Catholic Virginian, and the social media platforms of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Photography and/or screenshot images from the live-stream may be used for the Catholic Virginian print edition. If you do not wish to be captured by live streaming, please refrain from attending that particular Mass time.

October Rosary
15 minutes before Masses in October

Please plan to pray the Rosary with us every weekend before Mass during the month of October. We will start the live-stream 20 minutes earlier for those joining us for Mass online.

Why do we focus on the Rosary in October?

According to Rev. Matthew R. Mauriello from the University of Dayton:

“The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful.

The feast was introduced by Pope St. Pius V (1504-1572) in the year 1571 to commemorate the miraculous victory of the Christian forces in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The pope attributed more to the “arms” of the Rosary than the power of cannons and the valor of the soldiers who fought there.”

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!

First Friday Adoration and First Saturday Devotion
We will have a Holy Hour from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 1st followed by Mass at 12:10 p.m.

Members of the Legion of Mary will lead us in a rosary starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3rd in the sanctuary. We invite you to join us for this devotion. There will not be Mass.

Please note: The rosary will not be live-streamed.

Diocesan Octave of Service
Sunday, September 27 – Sunday, October 4

This past weekend we celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, the patron of the Diocese of Richmond. This week we're participating in the Octave of Service!

Our primary service project will be preparing advent/Christmas bags for inmates at Green Rock Correctional Center in Chatham, VA. It's likely we won't be able to gather as a large group to assemble the bags in December, so we've decided to start now and work on it throughout the fall – not just during the Octave.

A Google form will be sent out soon for you and your families to sign up to help! If you would like to help now, we are in need of these supplies for the bags:

  • Paper bags (7x4x13in)
  • Christmas cards
  • Construction paper
  • Pretzel/chips
  • Mints (round, dissolvable type, color: red and white)
  • Lined notebook paper
  • Envelopes
  • Postcard/mailing card
  • Ramen noodle packs
  • Hot chocolate packs
  • Prayer cards/holy cards
Please drop off your donations at the church. We appreciate your generosity!

Giving Tuesday
#iGiveCatholic and #GivingTuesday will be on December 1st this year! Last year, our school and church community helped us so much in donations that we were able to purchase our new activity bus. Keep an eye out on how you can help this year!

Box Tops
We are still taking Box Tops! Box Tops for Education has a new app for attaining Box Top points. You can also go to BTFE.COM. They are still accepting clipped Box Tops and will continue to do so until products no longer have them on the packages. Labels may be left in the church or school office. These labels provide the school with free educational supplies.

Other Announcements

Transitions in the Parish Office
Congratulations to Cici Yeager, our Communications Coordinator, who has accepted a new position at St. Mark Catholic Church in Wilmington, North Carolina. Her last day here at Sacred Heart is Wednesday, October 7, and she begins in her new position on October 12. We are tremendously grateful for so much that Cici has contributed: her prayerful design of the “Few Minutes of Faith” video testimony series, her oversight of our transition to the Flocknote communication system, her support with livestreaming many Masses and devotions, her massive efforts in keeping us connected during the recent turbulent months, and much more. While we're sad to see her go, we can't help being excited for the St. Mark's community who will be receiving her considerable gifts and talents. Cici's mother, Van, will continue her devoted service as our parish custodian, so we'll be excited to welcome Cici back to Sacred Heart when she comes to visit.

Also, congratulations to Homero Ramirez Leon, who has accepted a promotion from part-time Ministry Coordinator to full-time Communications Coordinator. Homero has worked in the parish office for less than a month, but has already demonstrated his initiative, organization, pastoral sensitivity and aptitude with technology. As a native of the state of Guerrero, Mexico, he brings important Spanish-language skills to our office, which is fundamental to our parish communication. Thank you for your prayerful support for Homero as he takes on new responsibilities!
