Dear parishioner,
Here’s what’s happening this week!

Advent Evening of Reconciliation
This Wednesday, December 15th, we will have our annual Advent Evening of Reconciliation at the church starting at 6:00pm. Fr. Anthony will be joined by Fr. Carlos Lerma from Martinsville to hear confessions. There will be a first come first serve system, so we recommend arriving early.

Virgin Mary and St. Joseph Figures
Join the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph as they travel to Bethlehem this Advent season! For the next 2 Sundays, we will place the porcelain figures you see to the right somewhere in the church. If you find them, take a picture of them (without moving them!), post it on Facebook, and tag either of our Facebook pages to enter in a drawing for a prize!

Angel Tree
Thank you to each of you who took Angels from our tree!!! Just a reminder:  Please have your gift(s) to the church no later than Wednesday, December 15, 2021, by 2 PM.   Make sure you wrap your gift(s) and secure the Angel to the outside of the gift(s) by the loop so that both sides can be read.  Distribution of the Christmas gifts will be on Sunday, December 19, 2021, at 2 PM.  Again, may the joy of Christ dwell in your hearts and guide you safely through 2022!

Offertory Envelopes
Offertory envelopes for next year are available on the table in front of the office. If you do not find a box with your name, please speak with Elaine or call (434) 792-9463

Young Adult Winter Weekend
January 7-9, 2022 in the Lutsen Mountains, Minnesota
By Into the Deep

Join young adults for an opportunity to connect in the relaxed atmosphere of Lutsen Mountains and Cascade Lodge. This 3-day winter getaway will allow us to set aside our electronics, get us talking, and engage both body and soul.  Participants may choose from an “a la carte” menu of activities on Saturday & Sunday: downhill skiing, snowboarding, XC skiing, or snowshoeing. Talks about our Catholic faith and the Theology of the Body will be inserted into our evenings and travel time. A priest will offer daily Mass and Eucharistic Adoration for our group while at Cascade Lodge.

Last day to register is this Friday, December 17th!

March for Life Pilgrimage
Thursday, January 20th – Friday, January 21st, 2022
Join the Office for Evangelization on our Diocesan-wide pilgrimage to the annual March for Life in Washington, DC! The trip includes the Life Is VERY Good events at EagleBank Arena: Thursday night’s Evening of Prayer and Friday morning’s Youth Rally & Mass. All 8th-12th grade youth and their chaperones are invited to attend. If you are interested, please speak with Joyce Bustamante for more information.

DYC
Friday, February 11th – Sunday, February 13th 2022
The Diocesan Youth Conference (DYC) is an annual weekend event that gathers high school youth from Diocese of Richmond parishes in one central location.

DYC is a highly energetic and engaging opportunity for our high school teenagers to gather as a larger Church community and celebrate the richness of our Catholic faith. This year, we will only be allowed a limited number of participants. If you would like to attend, please speak with Joyce Bustamante as soon as possible.

Volunteers and catechists needed!
If you feel called by God to share your talents and walk with others in their faith journey, please contact Joyce Bustamante at joyceb@sheartchurch.org for catechist or volunteer opportunities. We currently need 1 lead catechist for Middle School age students and 2 assistant catechists for High School age students.

It Will be December 31st Before You Know it!

You still have time to make a tax-deductible gift to our parish! If you have an IRA and you’re 72 years old or older, you can make a gift to our parish through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Consider this: federal tax law now allows you to make a distribution of up to $100,000 each year from your IRA to a qualifying charity and it is not subject to federal income tax.

Giving through your IRA is EASY! To learn how you can make an impact through your IRA right now, contact your financial advisor or Maggie Keenan at the Catholic Community Foundation – 804-622-5221 or mkeenan@richmonddiocese.org.

IMPORTANT: Please make your gift as soon as possible so you can ensure it is received by December 31st, 2021

The program has the same products, prices and shopping features as Amazon.com, but the school will receive .5% of the amount purchased. We’ve currently received over $100 this quarter! The school’s direct link is: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/54-0851867.

Box Tops for Education
We are still taking Box Tops! Box Tops for Education has a new app for attaining Box Top points. You can also go to BTFE.COM. They are still accepting clipped Box Tops and will continue to do so until products no longer have them on the packages. Labels may be left in the church or school office. These labels provide the school with free educational supplies.

Help SHCS, Help You!
Would you like to direct your Virginia State Taxes to Sacred Heart Catholic School? You can through the Virginia Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits program. Individuals or businesses making contributions of $500 or more can receive a Virginia TAX CREDIT equal to 65% of the donation. The monies are used for tuition assistance for students from families whose household income is less than 300% of the poverty level (for example, $72,900 for a family of 4), or 400% if the child is disabled. In addition, donors who itemize will also receive deductions for charitable contributions on state and federal taxes. Participants should consult their tax advisors to determine their specific tax savings.  Individuals and businesses can receive substantial tax benefits by contributing through the EISTC program. Contact Donna Comper at 793-2656 for more information.

Our Mission
Sacred Heart Catholic School’s mission is to establish a strong foundation for lifelong learning and provide an educational environment in which the basic tenets of Christian morals and ethics are visibly present. Recognizing the unique needs of each student, the faculty and staff will endeavor to nurture, challenge and guide all students toward their maximum academic, spiritual, physical, social, and emotional potential. As a Catholic school, we will emphasize God’s word and celebrate His presence through prayer, liturgy, and service to others.

Mass Times

Bishop Knestout and other bishops have decided to lift the dispensation of the Sunday and Holy Days Mass obligation in the Dioceses of Richmond, and will reinstate that obligation beginning on Saturday, June 26, 2021 and Sunday, June 27, 2021. We welcome and encourage the Faithful to return to full in-person participation of the Sunday Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith. If you would like to read the joint statement regarding Lifting the General Dispensation from the Obligation to Attend Mass , please click here.
This obligation does not apply to those who are ill; those who have reason to believe that they were recently exposed to the coronavirus, another serious or contagious illness; those who are confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility; or those with serious underlying health conditions. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the parish office.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19, Mass is still being live-streamed for use on various Diocesan digital media accounts of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, including, but not limited to, the websites of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and the Catholic Virginian, and the social media platforms of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Photography and/or screenshot images from the live-stream may be used for the Catholic Virginian print edition. If you do not wish to be captured by live streaming, please refrain from attending that particular Mass time.

Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners:

This is just a friendly reminder as it has become more and more frequent that people are receiving fake emails requesting money, gift cards, etc. from someone pretending to be a person that you know. Unfortunately, many of these emails tend to come in the form of an email account pretending to be Fr. Anthony, other parish office personnel, or school personnel. While, the Diocesan I.T. Department has zero control over which email accounts are created, it’s important to identify these fake email accounts, and remember that Fr. Anthony (or any Diocesan employee for that matter) will not handle business through an email address that is not part of the Richmond Diocese domain (@richmonddiocese.org). This is also the case for any Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic School employee and our email domains (@sheartchurch.org and @sheartschool.com, respectively).

These scams continue to be perpetuated because they continue to work. We ask that you do not reply to such emails, click on links within those emails or download content in them. If you receive help requests that you think are legitimate, verify that the person is legitimate by calling them directly on another known valid number. Don’t ask the emailer for information or a call. Find an offline method of correspondence that you and that person have used in the past to talk with each other.

In Christ,
Sacred Heart Catholic Church personnel
